The Lpp Story
In March 2020, along with so many other preschools, the one I was teaching at closed it's doors. That summer we were told it would not re-open in September. A few of the families that I was still in contact with asked if I could take their littles a few days a week so that they could try to homeschool their olders. As a homeschool mama myself I knew the challenges that could come along with "forced" homeschooling. So with the help of my village I found a space to sublease, got insured, hired my daughter to help me, and found a few more families to join us. We opened our doors in Sept 2020 with the intention of being open three months, long enough to give children a safe space to grow until their other preschools opened up. Myself, Amelia, and 12 children (ages 3+) met 3 days per week. Fast forward and here we are still offering a safe place for children ages 0-5 to grow, I have taken over the lease ensuring we will be here as long as we want to, and increased our staff and enrollment.
I chose Little Passports Playschool as the name to showcase my philosophy in Early Childhood Education. Little Passports because we "travel" the world teaching about other cultures and people. We teach that different isn't scary; it is just different. I do this in hopes of instilling tolerance of others at a young age and also to show them that the world is bigger than any of us. There is also a small hope that I might inspire a love of travel. The word Playschool was chosen very specifically as we are play based; meaning our students learn through hands on play. It is also used in other parts of the world to describe preschool settings.
We are a social emotional first, academic second program. This means we make sure the children feel safe, confident, and loved in order to ensure they can focus on grasping all of the concepts they need to grow. We are also stages not ages meaning children are never forced into a box based on their age. We understand and respect that every child develops at their own pace and we are going to create an environment that fosters that. While this philosophy is not the most popular among some I find it works best for us.
I am so appreciative of everyone who has been a part of this journey so far. If you think you would like to join our family please do not hesitate to reach out. I would love to share more information with you; and maybe talk about my favorite place to travel to... Ireland.
